Nikon F75 (yeah, the "F" is for film)

Way back when at Christmas (tough to believe a month has passed already), my Mom gave me an old Minolta Maxxum 5000, which is a really fun camera. Fast, accurate, awesome glass, user-friendly....and, well, like I say, just really fun. But this got me to thinking about all my other film cameras which, for the most part just sit on shelves or in bags, taking the back seat to the more economical digital cameras. This Minolta, though, has renewed my interest in film (not that it ever died, it was just laying there dormant). Long story short: thanks, Mom. I love the camera. And thanks for reminding me where I came from in the first place.

Now all I have to do is come up with an answer to Becki's first question when I tell her (in all my excitement) that I have the old film cameras working again: "So, what? Now you are going to start buying all sorts of film again?". Suggestions and solutions to my conundrum are welcome.......

I recently acquired some new wireless flash triggers. I can now trigger the flash from 327' away (as opposed to the 10 to 12' I was working with before), through walls, and around corners. These are the kinds of things I get excited about. I have never been a huge flash guy (always the hot lights instead). I have always appreciated the flash, but for such a long time I never actually had one......so, it was a matter of work with what you've got (or in my case as a young guy fiddling around with the photo taking, what I didn't have). Anyways, this is a photo of my camera bag....with two flash heads, an orange gel, and good ol' fashioned trial and error. I'm turning into a little flash-monkey, and one day soon you will see my results with people.

Late night photo work-shop (i.e. Gary's nose)

So....it's late. You are still a little wired from the Christmas shopping you did earlier. Can't quite calm the nerves from the Grande Latte you had while hitting the chapters and fending off the other shoppers at 8pm (what the heck were you thinking in the first place.....it was 8pm for dang's sake). Everyone's asleep, and your only model is a dog sleeping on the floor. What do you do? WHAT DO YOU DO?!?!? Well, in this case, my friends, grab your camera, some flash heads and start your very own late-night photo work-shop: "Wirelessly triggered flash: 101". Check out this EXIF data, my friends: ISO 200, 1/160s @ f/16. Exposure comp -0.3EV....manual setting on the flash head @ 1/8. I think I found a new way to keep myself occupado over the holidays. Crazy sharp, crazy results, CRAZY shit......crazy just like me right now on the Buckley's night time. G'night!

OK, so for whatever reasons, I no longer have the studio space at The Sheep. Whatever. I won't dwell on the details. Enough tears have been shed. It was too small anyways. However, some of the super-nicest people in the village, Rob and Nadia, have been so kind to me recently, allowing me to use this old theater space above Kaffe 1870.....which is just gorgeous, with endless potential. Trouble is, that it is nigh impossible to heat in the winter (but my hot lights do a pretty nice job of keeping the stage warm). I dunno. I just wanted to share it with people, that's all....

A job I did this morning out at the Ottawa Airport. I'm not ashamed to admit that sometimes the photo you are trying to take doesn't work out. I would never venture to say that I would ever get everything right when it comes to taking my photos. However, sometimes those little things (in this case a REALLY sensitive auto-focus), makes kind of an interesting photo. I originally had the focus on Elizabeth (who obviously knew she was having her photo taken), but when I re-framed the shot, the sensitive auto-focus went to Chief Stephen Augustine. I still thought it made for an interesting shot.

Fiftymen at the Clubhouse, or, "The Boys at the Fort"

I keep calling these the clubhouse shots, for the obvious reason that the series of photos is what it reminds me of. Or, "the fort". Standing around talking before they started recording, and before I started taking the photos, Mark mentioned that Draves' studio (i.e. where this shot is taken) was like his fort -- super eclectic, super comfortable, and the best spot in the world to go read comics and nudie magazines. I wish I had a spot like that. Anyways, carrying on, I have not been able to get that thought out of my head, and now I see it in photo form......the Fiftymen hanging out in front of the clubhouse. On Sunday, I met with Amanda, Randall, and their 3 month old Hazel. When I asked what they were looking for, what they were hoping to get out of the photos, their reply was, "Photos that aren't taken with a cell phone." That raises an interesting point (mind you, that will be for another post). Something I always like to do is import all the photos and then randomly select some of the first few that catch my eye in the "thumbnail" form. These are two photos of those that I first saw, and I can only hope so far that I am meeting or exceeding their expectations!

Whenever I think about buying a camera, I don't always think about what that camera can do better than the ones I already have.....instead I start thinking about all the extra crap on the camera that I will never use but still have to pay for. Flip screens, HD video, more auto settings and menu items than anyone could use in a lifetime. Take this shot for example: after a huge Thanksgiving turkey supper, near comatose, flat on my back on the living room floor, I was playing with the "pinhole camera feature", which is an incredibly easy effect to duplicate in Photoshop, but something that you still have to pay upfront for in the camera. Consumerism sucks. JJ always says that someone should make "just a camera", and he'd buy it. Me too. Just a camera that has manual settings and just takes pictures. What a concept.

"River", and a bit of a rant.....

Just finishing up family photos from last weekend from Allison + Peter. Related, but unrelated, I have been coming across what seems like hundreds of photographers who bring hundreds of pounds of lighting equipment, hundreds of pounds of batteries, spend hundreds of hours setting up and breaking down, and spend hundreds of hours compositing, cloning, layering, "HDR-ing", and editing in photoshop. And, I don't know. I think if you ask any number of photographers you will receive just as many different answers as to whether they like that kind of work or not. I find it visually appealing at first, but very quickly find myself thinking that all the different photos for all the different "clients" start to all look very much the same. Why not just try to get the photo right the first time and try to get an honest photo? I don't push the "look how artificially creative I can be" -- which, in a sense is also a way of saying "look at all the hundreds and thousands of dollars I DIDN'T spend and which you now DON'T have to help me pay for" -- I try to push the photographs like this instead:

From a family shoot Sunday morning -- I was taking some through the lens readings, and River was standing there keeping a close eye on me. Couldn't help but take this shot, despite the fact that I didn't have the flash on to fill the top section of the frame under the porch roof, and despite the fact that I hadn't moved the life jacket yet!

Phil Stokes with the bow of his new boat

A very exciting Wednesday and Thursday this week -- Phil and I spent 16 of about 34 hours traveling to St. Thomas and back to fetch this old boat that my grandfather built.....in 1939. It last saw water in 1953, and has been in my parents' garage ever since. Almost perfectly preserved. Boat comes with the motor (from the late 40's/early 50's) and the original gas tank...again, in great condition. This boat is truly awesome, and I am super happy that Phil is the guy that gets it.

Family friends from a different lifetime. I told my mom I would try to remember to post these photos so that she could see what they look like. I finally remembered. Truly wonderful people, Wayne and Linda Lee, and Ron and Linda Rakos. And very nice to have seen them (quite unexpectedly!) on our vacation and stop-over in High River. Becki and I were sitting at the picnic table just after supper, and this guy comes walking up the laneway and says, "Is this the Irvine residence?". I knew that I recognized him, but couldn't immediately put a name to the face -- couple that with someone saying my name in a town where no one should know where I was, and you have a bit of confusion.

We started off in-studio this morning, then went down to the McKenzie King Ruins in Gatineau Park. My trip home would have been a lot quicker if I had turned left instead of right. I ended up all the way in Gatineau (what listening to Wilco at high decibels will do to your concentration, I guess?) before I realized what I had done. Anyways, here are a few selections from a nice little morning spent with some of the nicest people I have met since coming here last year. It is always really nice to get together with them, and am really looking forward to their wedding in October......

HDKI goes off into the world on his first day of school

Big day for HDKI yesterday. First day off to K-4, and first time riding a bus to and from school. He did awesome. No problems leaving or getting on. Couldn't have gone better....for him. Me, not so much. Miss him already.
